1.1 Evolution of the WEB

The WEB can be thought of as network, something that is formed by interconnecting many parts, useful in many
ways.
It is probably easy to get into the network, but it is a difficult task to come out from the network.
The initial objective of web was information sharing and easy creation of Web sites that consisted of just text
documents (hypertext in some sense).
The Web has now rapidly grown by constant advances in Internet and Web standards and technologies, in the
extent of its use and scope.
In 10 years, the number of Web sites has grown rapidly from 100 to over 45 million.
Some areas where Web based systems and applications are widely being used to enhance and/or extend their
operations include:
Legacy information and database systems.
Enterprises such as travels, hospitality industries, banks, educational and training institutions, entertainment
business and government agencies.
Mobile web applications have evolved a lot due to advances in wireless technologies and portable
computing and communication devices.
