1.3 Corporate Digital Library Systems (CDLS).
We discussed digital library systems in details in lesson 10. In this section, we focus on the relation between digital libraries and I-commerce.
Traditional corporate library model largely based on printed resources no longer works effectively in business. Corporate digital library (CDL) needs an integrated collection of different types of information resources with an integrated interface of a digital library. Simultaneously, company philosophy, business cycles, goals of the company, priority, general function, work process, and resources available also need to be considered in the process of designing CDL (Xie 2006).
For digital libraries to provide access to copyrighted material, an access control and charging mechanism need to be put in place. E-commerce and specifically I-commerce provides digital libraries with the mechanism to provide access to copyrighted material in a way that will protect the interest of both the copyright owner and the digital library. Many organizations such as Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) have already started to make their collections available online (Al-Hawamdeh and Foo 2002).
