3.5 The Growth of Political Parties

With the spirit to oppose the Malayan Union, to liberate the homeland and to preserve the welfare of each race, the people formed political parties. Every party has its own objective and ideology. It was clear that the majority of them were based on ethnicity in which they struggle for the cause of their own ethnic. The main political parties that represent the three major races were UMNO (Malays), MCA (Chinese) and MIC (India). Besides, there were also parties without ethnic base such as IMP and Parti Negara. Apart from that, there were political parties that combined for the purpose of achieving the same cause.
