Summary


1- A syllable is a sound that can be said without interruption and are usually a vowel which can have consonants before and/or after it.
2- A Malay word can be divided into syllable. Each syllable in a Malay word can be produced by at least one vowel, or a vowel with a consonant.
3- Each of the syllables has a vowel. The vowels in the syllable are represented by ‘V’ while a consonant is represented by ‘K’. The combination of ‘V’ and ‘K’ is known as syllable pattern.
4- There are 11 syllable patterns in Malay words.
5- There are some exceptions to the pairing of vowels in Malay words.
6- The exceptions are for words that were originated from the Southeast Asian countries, and words that were borrowed from the English and Arabic words.
