2.1.1 Presentation
A vowel is a sound where air coming from the lungs is not blocked by the mouth or throat. A vowel is a speech sound, created by the relatively free passage of breath through the larynx and oral cavity, usually forming the most prominent and central sound of a syllable.There are six letters in Malay language represents a vowel.
a, e, ě, i, o, u
A vowel can produces a sound by itself or when combined with a consonant’s letters. Every syllable of a Malay word requires a vowel.
Vowel a :Vowel ‘a’ is pronounced as ‘aa’ or ‘are’.
Examples:
a) Ayam (chicken) - pronounced aa-yam
b) Aku (me) – pronounced aa-ku
c) saya (m) – pronounced saa-yaa
d) mata (eyes) – pronopunced maa-taa
e) kaya (rich) – pronounce car-yaa

Vowel ě :Vowel ‘ě’ (taling) is pronounced ‘eir’ or ‘air’
Examples:
a) meja (table) – pronounced mae-jar
b) sewa (rent) – pronounced sae-war
c) enak (delicious) – pronounced air-nak
d) ekor (tail) – pronounced air-corr
e) senget (leaning) – pronounced sae-nget
Vowel e :Vowel ‘e’ (pepet) is pronounced err
Examples:
a) emak (mother) - pronounced err-mark
b) kera ( monkey) – pronounced kerr-rar
c) peta (map) – pronounced per-ta
d) belah (cut) – pronounced ber_lah
e) cerah (bright) – pronounced cher-rah
