1.4 Pronunciation of digraphs


1.4.1 Presentations
Digraph are sounds in Malay language which represented by a combination of two consonants. Example: ng, sy, dh, gh, kh and ny. Example:

sy is the equivalent of sh in English

dh and gh are used in the spelling of words which was originated from the Arabic words.

hh is also used for words originated from Arabic. It is more ore less equivalent to the Scotish ch in loch. Examples:

   ikhlas (sincere)
   tawarikh (history)

ny sound is absent in English. In Malay words, it pronounced like the n in the Spanish word senor. Therefore the words:

minyak (oil) should be pronounced mee-nyak and not mean-yak or miniak.
banyak (many) should be pronounced bar-nyak and not barn-yak or baniak.
nyanyi (sing) should be pronounced nya-nyi and not nia-nee
