1.3 Pronunciation of consonants


1.3.1 Presentations
The pronunciation of consonants in Malay language is the same as in English. Examples:

c is pronounced ch as in chair, chin, much.
g is always hard such as in garden, gun, globe, but not
as in ginger.

h is used as an initial is very soft and hardly audible. For example: hidung (nose) and hulu (handle). The medial h should be distinctly pronounced when it stand between two similar or different vowels.

   pa/h/at (chisel)
   po/h/on (tree)
   si/h/at (healthy)
   ma/h/ir (skilled)

The final h is soft but must be distinctly pronounced. Examples:

   tana/h (land)
   ruma/h (house)
   leba/h (bee)


1.3 Pronunciation of consonants


The final k is soft and hardly audible. The sound is not exploded as in English. Example:

   sepak (kick)
   budak (child)
   perak (silver)
   tarik (pull)

The final r as a final letter is a penultimate syllable. It should be distinctly pronounced: Examples:

   kertas (paper)
   harta (property)
   derma (donation)
