Introduction

This paper is designed to provide the readers with a broad ‎understanding of the history of Islam in Africa. The focus will be ‎mostly on Middle and West Africa, but I will also look at ‎developments in the northern and eastern regions of the continent. We ‎will examine the process of spreading Islam in Africa and the variety of ‎Islamic experiences on the continent. Topics include the key ‎contemporary issues facing Muslims in the Horn of Africa region, ‎West Africa, Middle Africa and South of Sudan. Examples of these ‎issues include Islamic education and literacy, the status of women, ‎European colonial domination, Christianization and missionary ‎campaigns, and the contemporary development of political Islam.‎
