Introduction
This paper is designed to provide the readers with a broad understanding of the history of Islam in Africa. The focus will be mostly on Middle and West Africa, but I will also look at developments in the northern and eastern regions of the continent. We will examine the process of spreading Islam in Africa and the variety of Islamic experiences on the continent. Topics include the key contemporary issues facing Muslims in the Horn of Africa region, West Africa, Middle Africa and South of Sudan. Examples of these issues include Islamic education and literacy, the status of women, European colonial domination, Christianization and missionary campaigns, and the contemporary development of political Islam.
