11.1 Islamic education and intellectual development

The growth and development of Muslim intellectually is a matter that concerns. Both of the body and the mind. Many verses of the Holy Quran and many Hadithes mentioned, in this field, how to:

Protect these two members of sickness and destruction.
Grow them and their abilities to do their functions correctly.

For the field of protection

Many verse and Hadiths came to assure these objectives such as:

Protecting the life itself

The Holy Quran says "O we who believe eat not up your property among yourselves in vanities: but let
there be amongst you traffic and trade by mutual good will: nor kill (or destroy) yourselves: for verily God
hath been to you most merciful." (NISA:29) and "Lost are those who slay their children, from folly, without
knowledge, and forbid food which God hath provided for them, inventing (lies) against God. They have
indeed gone astray and heeded no guidance" (AN'AM 140).

Also the hadith "who killed himself with a piece of iron, he will used it killing himself in his stomach in the
hell fire forever. Who drank a poison and killed himself, he will drink it in hell fire forever. Who dropped
himself from a mountain and killed himself, he will be dropping in hill fire forever". As well as the following
hadith "who killed a believer and he was happy of this, Allah will not accept a ransom or a fine from him."
Which means that nothing will let Allah forgive him.
Allah, also, threatens the killer to punish him severely.

Protecting the body.

The following verse cares about the body by well division of the time between rest and work "He it is that hath made you the night that ye may rest therein, and the day to make things visible (to you). verily in this are signs for those who listen (to his message)." (YUNUS 67) and another verse "And made the night as a covering,(10) And made the day as a means of subsistence(11)" (NABA' 10-11). Also Islam cares about giving the body its needs, when some of the Prophet's friends asked the Prophet's wives about his worshiping in secret, some of them promised not to marry forever, some promised not to sleep in the beds and a third group promised not to eat meat, when the Prophet (pbuh) heard that, he came to the mosque, he thanked Allah then he asked why some people said such and such but I pray and sleep, I fast and I breakfast and I marry women. Whoever doesn't accept that, he,then, is not from me.

Although Islam cares about the body while satisfying its needs it does that in the cadre of balancing and warn from exceeding the limits of eating and drinking when the Holy Quran says "O Children of Adam Wear your beautiful apparel at every time and place of prayer: eat and drink: but wast not be excess, for God loveth not the wasters." (A'RAF 31).

From all these, we can say that Islamic education is responsible for how to teach the individual how to protect and guard his life and body "It is God who made out of the things he created, some things to give you shade; of the hills he made some for your shelter; he made you garments to protect you from heat, and coats of mail to protect you from your (mutual) violence. thus does he complete his favours on you, that ye may bow to his will (in Islam)." (NAHL 81).
