1.1 Introducing Data Communication


Data communication is concerned with transferring electronic data from source to destination
Various forms of data communications exists including:
Computer-oriented communication with the Internet being the most widely data communication networking system.
Telecommunication systems including cellular networks and the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).
Radio and Television broadcasting communication.
A typical data communication model includes: (see Figure 1.1)
The source: that generates data to be transmitted.
The Transmitter: that converts source data to an electronic signal which is transmitted through.
The Transmission medium: on which the signal representing the communicating data is transmitted.
The Receiver: that converts the received signal at the destination side to data and forwards it to
The Destination: that consumes the data received.
