Introduction

The purpose of data communication systems is first described in this lesson. This is followed by outlining the basic model of data communication. The role of computer protocols in data communication systems and the building blocks for a basic computer protocol are then considered. The layered Protocol architecture as a way to break the communication into subtasks is then explained. The Internet protocol stack is finally discussed as the most widely used layered protocol architecture.
