4.1 The Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC)

As part of the wider plan of the National Vision of 2020 to accomplish a knowledge-based society in
Malaysia,
The Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) initiative has been launched, a national Malaysian
governmental initiative to provide large-scale ICT and multimedia infrastructure and services.
Geographically, the MSC is located in a rectangle area (corridor shape) bracketed by the Kuala Lumpur
City Centre to the north and Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
MSC is intended to provide the ICT environment to attract skilled workers, researchers, entrepreneurs
and companies to invest and work in Malaysia.
MSC has three phases and it operations are managed by the Multimedia Development Corporation
(MDeC).
In the first phase (1996-2004), a framework of cyber laws was devised paving the way to the
establishment of the Cyberjava city attracting companies and skilled workers.
The second phase (2004-2011) aims to link the MSC with global knowledge cities.
The third phase (2011-2020) aims to expand the MSC project nationwide to achieve the knowledge-
based economy 2020 target.
