2.2 Project Management in the 19th Century

Large-scale government projects such as railways in the United States and Europe were catalysts in the development project management methodology.
Decisions had to be made to organize thousands of workers and to manage large quantities of raw materials.
At the end of the 19th century, Frederick Taylor made the first attempt to study the project management discipline in details.
He applied scientific reasoning to the way work in a project should be undertaken.
Taylor introduced the concept that work can be analyzed and improved by focusing on its elementary parts to ensure efficient work in terms of cost and time.
