2.5 Project Management since the 1960s


The Project Management Institute was founded in 1969 as a non-profit professional organization dedicated to support and advance the profession of project management
The Institute improved the project management profession by:
Setting professional standards,
Publishing a code of ethics,
Providing training and certification for individual project managers.
With more than 260,000 members from 171 countries in different disciplines, which include, engineering, information technology, business management, healthcare and construction, PMI formed a Specific Interest Groups (SIG) to allow members from the same field to exchange information and experiences.
PMI introduced the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Guide in 1987.
Its latest update was published in 2009.
At present, there are more than 1 million copies of the PMBOK Guide in circulation.
The highly regarded Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) have adopted it as their project management standard.
