4.6 Intranets and Extranets

Enterprise applications are costly for companies to implement, so they use intranets and extranets to achieve some measure of information instead of investing in enterprise applications.
Intranets and extranets are tools used in firms to increase integration and information flow inside and outside companies.
Intranet is an internal network used for distributing information internally to employees, and built with the same tools and communication standards as the internet.
Intranet utilizes portals that provide single point of access to several systems.
Extranet is the same as intranet but it is allowed to authorized users outside the company.
It helps to flow information between company and its vendors, suppliers, and customers, and create a collaboration environment among companies on product or service design, marketing and production.
