2.3 History of DNS

1. Before starting to use DNS in 1983, each site maintained a file called HOST.txt for mapping host name to network addresses.
2. However, the rapid growth of networks made it unviable to deal with hand-crafted HOSTS.TXT files.
3. It became critical to implement a more scalable translation system.
4. The following dates are considered relevant milestones in the DNS developments evolving history:

a) In 1983 Jon Postel and Paul Mockapetris wrote the first implementation of DNS
b) In 1987, the original specifications of DNS were published by Internet Engineering Task Force.
c) c) In 1984, the first UNIX implementation of DNS, called The Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND) was developed by Berkeley students.
d) In the early 1990s, BIND was incorporated in the Windows NT platform.
e) Finally, major parts of BIND were re-written and its version 9 was released which has been widely used.
