1.3 Types of Operating Systems


The types of operating system can be summarized as follows (Garrido et.al., (2011)):
Early computers did not need operating systems and the programs had to control the computer
resources.
The first computers that used operating systems are the simple batch system.
The next type of operating systems was the batch systems with multiprogramming.
Time-sharing operating system was the next generation where the operating system keeps switching
among running jobs.
Real-time operating system was developed to guarantee the critical tasks in this system are completed
on time.
