Introduction

The major function of the physical layer in the network stack is to move data across the transmission media. This is mainly attributed to the fact that the form of data that can be communicated between networks nodes in a networking environment is generally not in the form that allows us to send it across transmission media.

Several functions are carried out by the physical layer. First, it specifies the electro-mechanical specification of the interfaces as well as the transmission media. Second, the coordination and representation of bits that carry the data over the physical medium is another equally imposing task of the physical layer. Third, the transmission mode is also a major task handled by the physical layer.
