about any conceivable topic.
Computer network A collection of computers or computer-like devices that can communicate across a
common transmission medium.
Data network A system that transfers data between network access points (nodes).
Extranet A network that is limited in scope to a single organization or entity and also has limited
connections to the networks of one or more other usually, but not necessarily, trusted
organizations or entities.
Instant messaging A real-time text communication between two or more users. It has expanded to include
(IM) voice, photo and video sharing, and file transfers.
Internet A network of networks.
Internetwork A collection of two or more LANs connected by WANs.
Internet service A company that provides access to the Internet.

Terminology

Intranet A set of networks that is under the control of a single administrative entity.
That administrative entity closes the intranet to all but specific, authorized users.
Most commonly, an intranet is the internal network of an organization.
Local Area A computer network that interconnects computers in a limited area such as a
Network (LAN) home, office, building, or campus.
Metropolitan Area A network with a size between a LAN and a WAN. It normally covers the
Networks (MAN) area inside a town or a city.
Podcasting An audio-based medium that originally enabled people to record audio and convert
it for use with iPods.
Wide Area A network that provides long-distance transmission of data over large geographic
Network(WAN) areas that may comprise a country, a continent, or even the whole world.
Wiki A type of publicly created web content. Wiki web pages are created and edited
by groups of people sharing information.
